Okay so I explained to my mom that I didn't want to go to church because I'm tired, and that wasn't good enough. She said to me in a friendly manner "Oh, it'll fun. Just get up." So clearly being tired isn't a good enough excuse. So then I up the ante and tell her that it makes me uncomfortable, that still wasn't good enough. Then I told her in a number of words that I found people taking an imaginary friend so seriously to be somewhat disturbing. And although we didn't talk for a while, and although it was established that going to church really did make me uncomfortable for obvious reasons, she still wants me to go.

Well, like I said, maybe your mother understands that you don't believe in god, but want you to learn the lesson, "sometimes you have to do things you don't want to do." All you're doing by arguing with her is increasing your displeasure. Think of it this way, to you going to church is unpleasant. If you accept it and go without arguing then you are really only miserable during church. Before and after church you are happy. But if you argue with your mother then you are also going to be miserable before church and after church as well. Not to mention the kind of problems that happen at other times, such as the knock-down-drag-out fight you'll inevitably have with her when you flat refuse to go to church anymore.

Accept that you can't change the fact that your mother is exposing you to her religion. When you are old enough you may fully renounce it and there is nothing she can do about it, you will be out from under her care. If you're looking to maximize happiness, then you need to learn to accept that which you cannot change. And in this instance you cannot change her mind about you attending church once a week.

Just be glad you're not Muslim.

I've been an atheist since I was about 15. I was taken to church up to that point, and until I was 18. After that I had a choice.

I could have chosen to fight with my parents (it wouldn't have gone well) because they were forcing me, but instead I just went and listened, and didn't believe. Anyway, what do you think contributed to my current state? A lot of it was my catholic education at the hands of teachers who were chosen for their faith who weren't and didn't need to be qualified for teaching. There are many instances I can name where teachers failed me. It was mostly my parents, but there were signs teachers should have picked up on.

Depends on your age and maturity and grades in school.

There is a point where you end up old enough and have those OTHER Factors that allow you to become your own person.

At 12/13 I told my Mom, I wanted OUT of the Religion I was born into. My Grades were great and my hobbies were on the adult side (Engineering/Electronics)

I was set free from having to go to the Religious stuff but NOT without a price on pressure from my MoMs friends.

Freedom does not come easy. Family has needs and if they differ from yours, you best have everything else in order to stand your own ground. Life as a kid/teen is always a compromise. YOU have do decide what is best for YOU vs Family and have all your bases covered.
