Why can’t we talk first and get to know each other so we’re comfortable enough to show ourselves. I think this might why I’m still single because I’m always afraid to engage. I’ve had two guys try to convince me it’s okay because they’d delete it right away. But there’s no real guarantee that they would. Ugh.

Physical attraction and personality come hand in hand. However, you can tell pretty quickly if you're attracted to someone or not where as personality compatibility takes a lot longer so you need to get the first one sorted first or you're potentially in for a lot of disappointment

Being physically attracted to someone or not isn't being shallow. If being physically attracted to someone the only requirement one had then that would be shallow.

Physical attraction is absolutely an important aspect of a relationship. It's absurd and downright naïve to think otherwise.
And just send regular pictures, not nudes ffs. I don't understand why you'd want them to delete the pictures right away either.

It's normal to want to be physically attracted to a partner, lol. I don't think it's at all unreasonable to want to know what someone looks like in the early stages of chatting.

I get the impression that OP hasn't dated much before and has an idealised view of what people find important in a partner. It's a bit amusing, and a bit sad, to see them call out others as "shallow" for finding physical attraction important. I think they will have a bit of a shock when they date more people. I hope it doesn't go too badly though.

I’m scared the other person will use it against me. I’ve always been afraid of that and the stories I’ve heard about this happening in these dating websites are what triggered this fear.

That's a risk any time you meet someone. Especially with online dating, but in real life too. It's something you kind of have to come to terms with.
