Let's say you own a standard definition television. This entire image represents the total viewing area/entire screen of that television.

Now let's say you use an antenna. Since nowadays they only broadcast digital signals, we must use a digital converter box. Most HD channels are widescreen, so it makes sense to set our converter box to letterbox mode, right? The entire image represents the TV screen, while the inner box represents what we now see.

Now let's say you're watching an HD channel, but they decide to show something that isn't HD, or at least not in widescreen. Black bars go on the side of the video, coupled with the black bars from our converter box's widescreen letterbox setting. Again, the entire image represents the TV screen, with the inner-most box representing what we now see.

Now, let's say the dumbshits broadcasting this television show want to show a commercial or something that's in widescreen. Why use the whole widescreen format, when you can letterbox again? Again, the entire blah blah blah, you get it.
