How much does an uninsured ER visit (and/or doctor appointment, but please specify which) cost in your area? Last time I went to the ER, two years ago, there was a sign in the window saying that uninsured visits cost ~$1700. That's fucked up.

Anonymous B joined in and replied with this 5 years ago, 1 minute later[^] [v] #1,119,969

Depends on a few factors. $1700 is a good starting point.

What's a good ending point/upper limit? And what are the factors?
The $1700 is just for being seen, anything on top of that costs more.

Services rendered are the factors. IDK where an ending point is, most they've charged me was like $25,700.

Probably a few thousand. It is fucking ridiculous. If you have a test or procedure? Could be up to $10,00 or more.

It's normal for insurance to have deductibles and copays.

Upgrade to universal healthcare so when you don't go to the ER you can pay for everyone who does!

yeah and it was just a few stitches. most of the cost is just for even going to the ER at all. apparently, unless you're dying, you should go to urgent care because it won't cost you as much

Highest my medical bill has been without insurance was $43,000. That was from when I was hospitalized from being bit by a deer tick while hiking, and spent 2 weeks in hospital.

Christ that's extortionate. Imagine getting your credit fucked and debt collectors chasing you for seven whole damn years or going bankrupt because you got sick or injured

Anonymous J replied with this 5 years ago, 4 minutes later, 19 hours after the original post[^] [v] #1,120,244

They bug you for a while, but then they let up and just leave it in your credit report. I have a bill that's been on my credit report for 6 years. About one more year and it'll be gone.

I could pay the $303.00 that I owe, but then it would remain on my credit report for 7 more years. So I'll just let then erase it when it's passes the 7 years mark, then I don't have to worry about it anymore.

It's just so complex and there's so little guidance. The consequences are harsh and there's no safety net. But it's the lack of guidance that gets me.

Yeah. It's a truly terrifying prospect for me. It's made worse by the fact that I work in a pretty small field, too. I've seen some of my friends repeatedly fuck up their lives due to mental illness. It's just. Scary.
