What's funny about this is that this is the exact advice the "actual scientists" gave until the beginning of April:

But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it "does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19."

The No. 1 way to prevent coronavirus isn't wearing a face mask

"Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others," the CDC's website says. "The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility)."

The U.S. Surgeon General put it even more emphatically, tweeting: "Seriously people — STOP BUYING MASKS!

So PJW was repeating the official, scientific, guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and the US Surgeon General.

It's the same clout you get from clapping for the NHS. While clapping for the NHS is pure signalling, wearing a mask is both practical (to prevent catching or spreading the Wuhan Flu) and signalling (that you are "doing your part").

but it's not like wearing a mask (if you don't have corona) helps anyone but you so what are you wanting to signal
