Yeah, I did it for Pokemon Silver. I put down 5 bucks at WalMart and picked it up the day it came out. I still remember that day still.
I also preordered quite a few DS games from GameStop back in the day.
Nowadays I’ll just order on Amazon and get it delivered within 2-3 after release. I don’t need games day one anymore. I hardly play games anymore. The last game I bought was the Link’s Awakening remake and it’s still sealed in shrink wrap
