"The victim was attacked while he awoke" sounds kind of clunky. Also, maybe the victim couldn't wake up due to being dead.

"The victim was asleep when the attack started" would be fine. I do think you wake up before you die, generally. But I am not a doctor. I will ask Dr. Dreamworks.
