Topic: Coronavirus question

started this discussion 6 years ago #98,522

Ok, now that everyone has been staying at home, everything looks a teensy bit better so we are ready to flood back into the streets and reopen the economy, some are saying.

But there are no drugs that stop the virus and no vaccines to prevent it, right?

So when everyone goes back into the streets and back into the businesses that had been closed, won't the infections explode again, just like it happened before we all hid inside?

I think so yeah. Except maybe in a very positive estimate, 50% slower now since people will be on the lookout

Flattening the curve sounds good, yes it may mean the death have not kept climbing at a high rate.

But dont we need to stay at home until there is a drug or vaccine remedy?

Yeah to the extent that the number of infections are growing slower day by day, it's largely because people are staying home and life is not continuing as usual. If people go back to doing what they were doing before, the infection and death rates will start rocketing up again. We cannot return to anything approaching normalcy until we have a vaccine, or robust nationwide testing that allows us to detect asymptomatic virus carriers and quarantine them. Going back to normal before either of those two things is going to result in hundreds of thousands of deaths instead of tens of thousands, at best.

China is a vital cog in global capitalism. Nothing will be done to it, unless you want to start sewing your own clothes and glueing your own phone together.

Actually if you go look at your clothes, not much of them are made in China. Or at least most of mine aren't. Lots of Bangladesh, Honduras, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Vietnam, but not much China. Even my shoes are not made in China (the ones I'm wearing now are Indonesia).

Phone yes but I've recently owned phones made in Vietnam and Korea.

I was giving 2 examples by way of simplifying. The broader point is, the USA's brand of global capitalism needs China as much as China needs the USA. They will not be punished, for the exact same reason Mohammed bin Salman was not punished for ordering the cutting up of Jamal Khashoggi.

Mohammed bin Salman wasn't punished by America because how Saudi Arabia handles Saudi dissidents outside of America isn't any of America's business. It's between Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

America doesn't interfere in the affairs of other nations? Hysterical. That must presumably be why the US imposed sanctions on Russia for the attempted assassination of a Russian spy on British soil.

Here's the situation. If tomorrow China decides to commit genocide against the Uyghurs (oh wait, they did), the American government will not do a single thing to punish them for it (oh wait, they didn't).

Stop fixating on numbers and try to think in geopolitical terms. The rule is this: you can kill anyone you want in this world, and in whatever quantity you like, provided you serve US economic interests (for another example, see Saudi Arabia's recent genocide in Yemen in which they killed buses of children with American bombs*). But if you oppose American economic interests then look out because "freedom and democracy" (i.e invasion) is coming your way.

We launched 50 cruise missiles at Syria 2 years ago because Assad gassed his own people, and blew up Soleimani 2 months ago because he allegedly was behind an attack that killed at most one U.S. contractor in Iraq. Except, you know, not.

China? It can do what is pleases as long as we keep our trade agreements.

Russia? Sure. Occupy other countries like we would have objected to during the cold war. Whatever. We love you now! That's cemented into the Party platform.

Syria? Sure. You like Russia? Great. Gas some people.

Saudis? Yep. Jared is friends with that guy, so he must be cool.

Iran? Hmmm. Whatever. IDK?

Wait... North Korea? Still pursuing nuclear fucking weapons. Ummm... I guess he's friends with somebody? Maybe? IDK?

There's no "pimp hand" asshole. The "pimp hand" is gone. The US hasn't pimp-handed anyone down in a while. Trump just melts and gushes from his crotch over any powerful ruler of an autocratic state. It gets us nowhere. He's not defending democracy. He's defending autocracy.

It's now to the point where the pimp is slapping back because we're a helpless little bitch. The US has pretty much let any potential enemy like Iran or ISIS or North Korea or Russia just fuckin' live their best life for the better part of three years now. What's the answer now? Nationalism? Challenge them to 4D Chess? Do we just retreat to our borders and say "you can't touch us" while the global situation that once depended on us as a world power collapses in our wake and we watch helpless as people call for our stabilizing influence as we yell "not our problem!?!"

What's your great plan once the US falls into the role of economically ruined nation-state? Do we all watch FOX News until we don't believe it anymore? What the fuck do you think the answer is? How do you think our people will take going from world-power to backwater-joke-no-nation-takes-seriously in a generation?

Also, nationalities that carried out 9/11:

Saudi Arabia
United Arab Emirates
Egypt
Lebanon

Countries that George Bush consequently grouped into the 'Axis of Evil' 5 months later:

Iran
Iraq
North Korea

It takes supreme confidence in the stupidity and ignorance of its own citizens for a government to pull that kind of stunt. I guess they knew that most right-wing Americans wouldn't care too much about who actually carried out the attacks so long as they can watch some brown people getting blown up on TV.
