...which deletes characters in front of the cursor. But what they really need is a key which simultaneously deletes stuff both in front of and behind the cursor. For when you're in the middle of something which needs to be deleted.

Editors like vim and emacs have had this kind of functionality for decades.
In vim, for example:
d+leftArrow will delete under cursor and left character
d$ will delete from cursor to end of line
d0 will delete from cursor to beginning of line
dw deletes current word and trailing whitespace
db deletes current to beginning of current word
d^ will delete from cursor backward to first non-white-space character
dd delete current line
3dd delete next three lines
3dw delete next three words
Once the physics of time travel are ironed out and if quantum computing is all people hope it will be, then we'll eventually have functions to preemptively delete stuff that you haven't written yet but will later decide to remove.

No? That doesn't delete individual characters, you moræ! It deletes the entire part of the word until it hits whitespace.
