Topic: Aight I'ma give you an Irish lesson

Lesson #1.
Saying hello.

In Irish the first person says "dia duit".
The second person says "dia is muire duit"

It literally means, "God with you" and then "god and Mary with you". Quite a Catholic language, it is.

Can I say "doot doot" instead?

In Northern Ireland they speak English, because they are British!

Ireland has roots in Catholicism? I am shocked!

@OP
Are you still teaching during all this or have the Irish schools fully closed down?

How do the Irish reconcile their desire to be independent with following this Roman religion? ?

Also is there any potential for this Catholic greeting to escalate?

A: God with you!
B: God and Mary with you!
A: God, Mary, and Jesus with you!
B: God, Mary, Jesus, and the saints with you!
etc
etc

The custom of the recipient of the greeting one-upping the initiator of the greeting bugs me. It would be much better if it was:

A: God with you!
B: And also with you!

You know something that ended it with both parties being equal.

What this reminds me of more than anything is the Muslim greeting As-salamu alaykum (except the Muslims get it right by having the response be "And peace be upon you, too.", preventing escalation.)

I find it interesting that English seems devoid of religious-based greetings.

But no one could understand them! ?

Most people in England wish the Irish would take it back because it costs us a fortune. At one stage a British government was going to just let it go and leave it to decide if it joins Ireland or be independent in itself but the IRA just had to blow up a pub and kill loads of people so the public wouldn't have it

Most of the swear words in Quebecois are religious. Tabarnak, criss, ciboire, esti/osti, câlisse (tabernacle, christ, the receptacle in which the host is stored, the host, chalice)
