Yeah this is a game marketed towards 10 year olds. And your team gets better the more you play. As long as you can beat the Elite 4 your team is fine. Just try to have a mix of different types of pokemon and keep them all around the same level and you shouldn't really have any trouble.

That's a fine party for the early game! In general pokemon that evolve early are weaker and level up more slowly than pokemon that evolve later. Butterfree and Beedrill are excellent early/mid game pokemon but by late game can be slightly outmatched. You can beat this game pretty easily though so don't feel like you need to swap them out or anything. Otherwise it seems fine. Just in general have a plan for how you'll beat certain types of pokemon/gyms. That seems like the kind of party you would have in Cerulean so you'll have to fight Misty. Pikachu should be fine for that if you level it up enough. Then you'll find the next gym and strategize about how to beat that. The game is pretty good about making sure you will never be hopelessly outmatched.

Oh yeah that's the other thing. Partner pokemon are overpowered in this game. You could honestly beat it with just using your eevee the entire game. It's a huge crutch.

It could only learn fly in yellow. RB it couldn't. I think I had a pidgeot because I liked pidgey. I really wish the battery in my games didn't die so I could go back and see what I did.

Yeah, the batteries in Gameboy gaems die frquently. I have a few Gameboy gaems with a dead batterie, but my copy of TLOZ on NES still has a working battery.

It is not possible to explain them in "rock, paper, scissors terms", due to type mixing. When they first added Rayquaza to the game, very few types were super effective against it. Even now, only four types are super effective against Rayquaza. However, Ice type attacks do ×4 damage to it, because ice is super effective against both dragon and flying. You see, it really isn't as simple as rock, paper, scissors. If you need help reading that chart, I'll do my best to explain it to you.

Well, that will definitely beat them, but creating a team of one type to take on the gym is a huge task unto its self. Catching six of the same type pokemon, leveling them up to match the gym leader's pokemon, all just to do it again for the next gym. In my experience, it is best to just have a well rounded team. Most pokemon on your team should have normal effectiveness against the leader's pokemon. Unless the gym is steel or rock type. Another good strategy is to make sure each pokemon has at least one normal type attack. Then, even if the leader is strong against that pokemon, it isn't completely worthless. It wouldn't hurt to have a dark or psychic type pokemon on your team, either. Those types are effective against most other types, and the majority of psychic attacks deal with spc defense, instead of physical defense. Which can make quick work of a wide variety of pokemon.
Also, bug pokemon have very low defense stats, and are generally one of the worst types of pokemon.
