Topic: I lost EVERYTHING on my Windows 10 PC.

Ms. Constantine !ttGirlsPl2 started this discussion 6 years ago #98,210

So... a few weeks if not months ago, my router died. We got a new one, a better one, the speeds feel orgasmic. However, during the period of the broken router, my computer suffered a major setback. When I went to boot it up everything from my desktop wallpaper settings to all of my stored documents and files were gone. However, what remained was the applications that were installed which still showed up during a Cortana search and are listed in the Start menu. I called a local computer repair shop to ask them what the problem was, but they told me to install TeamViewer and to expect a call sometime after 6 PM. It is currently 12:19 AM where I'm at. I don't think this is because it loaded a new account as it shows that I am logged into the administrator account. I think... I log into my computer using a Microsoft account. So I'm not sure if it is a new profile or the administrator profile. Please tell me there is hope that all of my files are still on the hard drive and if not, should I embrace this new clean slate that I was mysteriously granted?

Jemima Aquanetta Constantine, I am really sorry. I hate Windows for this very reason. Mac OS is superior.

Have you looked for your stuff in the C:\Users\$USERNAME directory? Maybe an environment variable like HOMEPATH got changed causing you to get a clean user directory to boot from.

Just poke around the filesystem. It's exceptionally unlikely everything is gone. Presumably this happened after an update?

I didn’t lose everything it just sort of override the account. The tech guy made a new folder on my desktop called backup. But there were a lot of TEMP.COMPUTERNANE directories that he didn’t know the reason why. He said it could have been a virus or an update. He’s seen updates do this before.

Good news: I didn’t lose anything.

Updates routinely do this sort of thing, unfortunately. You needn't have paid anybody, tbh. But I'm glad you didn't lose anything.

Oh, that's cool. :) Well I'm glad you got it sorted. Maybe use Google Drive to back up important things (if you don't already), or use Windows' various features to make backups to a UBS/external HDD/whatever.

I'm thinking of investing in a new external hard drive that is more than 1 terrabyte.

I'm going back to just keeping stuff there.

If you're looking to back up more than just documents and photos, I'd keep an eye on 4TB ones and go for one when they're cheap, if I were you. You can often pick up decent 4TB drives for ~$75 on Amazon. (Might be overkill - depends what you want to preserve.)

I'd strongly suggest keeping crucial things on Google Drive or Dropbox, encrypted, tho.

I keep things on Drive, Dropbox, and locally. I don’t mind the extra space. I was thinking maybe 8TB and moving everything from my 1TB over.

Good lad! Too few people are sensible with backups. If you're going for 8TB, maybe you could get 2 x 4TB? That way, you'd have some level of redundancy — keep copies of some files on both drives, so you're safe if the other drive fails. Just a thought.

If you're going to use 8TB to backup 1TB, then you probably also need 16TB of cloud storage to backup the drives. You should also have 16TB of physical drives, but they need to be kept at a safe off-site location. It's no good having 32TB of backups sitting next to your computer if a local event happens.

May as well throw in 256TB kept in cold storage, for good measure.

Yes but please explain to Catherine that by cold storage you do not mean keeping it in the fridge.

I mean, you reckon it's better off in the oven? ? Maybe the heat will aid the data transfer.
