Because this is a lot more infectious than flu and a lot more fatal. Flu has a 0.1-0.2% mortality rate, this is around 3-5%.

It's the same reason a regular $3000/month mortgage payment isn't treated as a crisis but when your car breaks down and needs $4500 worth of repairs it's an emergency.
I think also we should be treating the flu more seriously. It is one of the most predictable public health issues facing the world and that the predictable and routine nature of it has made people numb to its severity.

Yeh people like op forget its really only been like what, 4 months? It was in early December that patient zero got sick right? Anyway, because there's no herd immunity and because it's very contagious and stealthy in its outbreaks with a lot of people not even having symptoms yet infecting people, it would kill a lot of people very fucking fast if we just gave up on trying to control this thing.
