why live in reality when there are better fantasies?

if you can dream it, you can do it!

This post reminds me of the song "Innocent When You Dream", for some reason.

Considering the ad he's upset about literally cut and pasted segments of audio together (and it says this in the story you link) to make it appear as if Trump said something he didn't, kinda makes you think about who's actually trying to alter reality here ?

Look if you want to cut and paste stuff together to fabricate quotes, that's totally cool but at least own up to your forgery when you're caught. That's all I ask.

"Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus. You know that, right? Coronavirus. They're politicizing it. We did one of the great jobs, you say, 'How's President Trump doing?', 'Oh, nothing, nothing.' They have no clue, they don't have any clue. They can't even count their votes in Iowa, they can't even count. No, they can't. They can't count their votes. One of my people came up to me and said, 'Mr. President, they tried to beat you on Russia, Russia, Russia.' That didn't work out too well. They couldn't do it. They tried the impeachment hoax. That was on a perfect conversation. They tried anything, they tried it over and over, they've been doing it since he got in. It's all turning, they lost. It's all turning, think of it, think of it. And this is their new hoax. But you know we did something that's been pretty amazing. We have 15 people in this massive country and because of the fact that we went early, we went early, we could have had a lot more than that."

It's pretty clear Trump is saying the Democrats' politicization of Coronavirus is the hoax, not the actual virus itself. When you edit it to say "Coronavirus is a hoax" you significantly change the meaning.

Now you can argue whether or not the virus was politicized by the Democrats but that's totally separate from whether or not Trump called the coronavirus itself a hoax, which he never has.

How can the politicization of something itself be a hoax? I dont think it's at all clear what he means here. I think editing it to imply that he clearly meant the virus itself was a hoax is a stretch, but I have read that four times and dont know what he means.

As much as I hate to side with Trump and his supporters, they're kind of right here. Yes, Trump is incompetent and doesn't understand the coronavirus, but the video was altered to make him look worse than he is.

He's said enough dumb stuff about it without you having to use fake shit too.

your interpretation makes no sense. pointing out that corona virus needed more attention when trump's attention was lacking turned out be true for fuck sake

Actually I think I get it now. I think the Democrats were saying he was unprepared and didn't have the virus under control and had no plans to combat it. He is calling that a criticism a hoax (whatever that even means) because only 15 people in america had it, even though it could have been many more. Well, I have to say, arguably, the Democrats were correct, now that there are over 75,000 cases and 1,000 dead Americans, which is arguably more than 15 cases and 0 dead.

he obviously was saying that corona was really no big deal and anyone trying to say it is a big deal is trying to do a hoax about it

This is what gets me. If Trump is as bad as people say he is surely he would have enough genuinely bad quotes to use in political ads against him? I mean no one has to edit Hitler or Goebbels quotes to make the Nazis look bad.

> How can the politicization of something itself be a hoax? I dont think it's at all clear what he means here.

I think he is misusing the word "hoax". Eloquence isn't Trump's thing, to put it mildly.

My translation of the quote into actual English is this:

The Democrats' politicization of the Coronavirus is the latest in a long string of baseless accusations against my administration. We did a great job of responding to it and when people are asked "What is President Trump's response to the virus?" the answer from the Democrats is "Oh nothing, nothing". They are clueless. They can't even count their votes in the Iowa primary. One of my people came up to me and said "Mr. President, they accused you of collaboration with Russia". That attempt to end my presidency failed. They couldn't do it. They tried to impeach me on false charges regarding my conversation with the President of Ukraine. I did nothing wrong during that conversation. They've tried everything they can think of to get me out of the Oval Office, and they've been trying since the day I got in. The tide is turning against them: they lost. Think about it. This politicization of the coronavirus is their latest baseless accusation. But you know we did an amazing job responding to the threat of the virus and although 15 people have died from the virus, without our early response the death toll would have been much higher than that.

> I think editing it to imply that he clearly meant the virus itself was a hoax is a stretch, but I have read that four times and dont know what he means.

I'd say it goes beyond "a stretch" and is a total lie and falsification. Hopefully my translation makes it clearer.

no, he was saying only 15 died so it's being taking care of just fine

only after bow-tie man from Fox News met up with him and explained that it's a real threat did Trump get motivated to really get busy on the thing. can you believe we have that smarmy bow-tie man to be thankful for today? Christ

Now that you have done tons of work trying to make the babbling moron speak of the president into something resembling coherence, I get where you're coming from. What do you think the ad meant when it had Trump calling the virus a hoax? Do you think the ad was implying that Trump literally did not believe in the existence of the virus? Do you think that is the message people listening to it took away? In other words, if you were to extend the same benefit of the doubt and intellectual legwork to this campaign ad as you did to the verbal diarrhea stream that Trump spewed, what would your understanding of the ad writers' intended message be?

And what exactly do you think they mean by that? That Trump at one point didn't believe the virus existed at all and thought the Democrats were completely inventing a virus that wasn't real?

I wouldn't have cut the ad this way. I think it was done this way deliberately to be inflammatory and controversial and I don't like cheap shots like that, especially for someone as obviously stupid and corrupt as Trump. That said, you are reading Trump in the absolutely most positive light, inventing whole sentences and rhetorical intentions where none exist to try to make sense of one paragraph of a Trump speech, while taking the most hyper literal and uncharitable interpretation of five words to make this ad seem bad.

You're a Trump supporter so that approach makes sense on some level, but as someone who doesnt like Trump and also doesn't like this ad, it just seems really weird to me.
