Topic: Could we see the return of drive in services?

Boost sales for Sonic and perhaps more drive in restaurants? As well as the return of drive in movie theaters? This seems like a perfect time to make a comeback.

Drive ins are super popular. That's why there are like seven left in the country.

And they’ll having a gay old time right now with all of the boosts in customers.

If we have to self-isolate and remain in quarantine for a year then we might see these rise again.

According to driveinmovie.com there are 335 drive-in theaters operating in the US. I had no idea there were so many still.

The 17 drive-ins in California are experiencing quite the boom.

The one closest to me in Barstow is closed because of coronavirus. They’re kind of stupid right now since they could be seeing a lot of profit.

Just limit the number of people at the concession stand and restrooms or just close them. Then again, if they keep it clean frequently then there shouldn’t be a problem.

I understand why they close since there was 1 case in Barstow, but still, they’re missing out.

The last one I went to was a drive-in down by San Diego almost a decade ago. It was mostly full of stoners who wanted to roast a bowl while watching the latest movies. It was pretty chill compared to going to a local megaplex theater with hundreds of other people. I don't see why drive-ins couldn't make a comeback.

Now is the perfect time for that comeback. Sadly, once this ends they will go back to being a niche nostalgic attraction but they might be in good company with the megaplexes and cinemas.

It feels like it would be a great time for a comeback. I hear the economics of running a theater are pretty wild and they end up relying a lot on concession sales more than ticket prices to keep things running sometimes. It seems like the overhead on a drive-in would be minimal when compared to lighting, air conditioning, cleaning, staffing, and supplying a full indoor theater. Technologically too, we're in a place where people would be capable of picking up the movie audio track and playing it through their automobile sound system or mobile device instead of relying on a tinny public speaker system. Plus, the megaplexes are full of sticky seats and noisy people using their phones.

I've never tried to run a theater though. Not being familiar with the intricacies of that industry, I'm sure there must be some consideration I'm missing. It just sounds like it should work though.

I don't know that there's a good spot for a drive-in theatre near here but it'd be cool. I've been to a couple open air bike-powered screenings and they were quite fun.

They could also take the concessions to an app so you could just buy what you want and then have it brought out to you with minimum contact. I’m not sure how that works with social distancing though but Sonic is apparently making it work.

Customer goes to the concession stand:
I'd like a large popcorn, a box of them chocolatey goobers, some nachos and a liter of cola, please.

OK...That will be $63.09, Sir.
