Topic: The situation warrants speculation and oh boy is there speculation
Anonymous A started this discussion 6 years ago#97,795
The future is particularly unknowable for now and I wonder how i myself, my family and society will go into it and receive it. Then there's the issue of what exactly is happening and if this or that is to blame, politics if you can even call it that. Lastly, I speculate about myself too. I don't feel the same, I feel colder inside and that I should no longer respect people. I'm beginning to think, sometimes, that my problems in life is putting too much weight on what other people think or feel, I'm not good at that and I should stop doing that.
Anyway what about you? Feeling overwhelmed by speculation as well?

I had to start avoiding the news because i get overwhelmed by anxiety due to everything going on right now. I wish i had more stuff to do. I wish the libraries were open so i had a quiet place to go read.

I try to speculate about cat pictures for at least 20 minutes each day. Will the cat will climb into the box? Will fluffy finally catch the feather floating around the room? These are questions worth asking.

This except I started avoiding the news like 5 or 6 years ago. This is why I often appear uninformed on current political happenings, because I only hear about them secondhand.

I'm usually fine and like being at least somewhat informed but the corona news is just so...much. I can't handle it.

I cope with it like this: "A coward dies a thousand times before his death, but the valiant taste of death but once" Whatever the worst is, it will happen or not and there is nothing you can do to stop it. If the worst does happen, there will be plenty of time to panic and grieve. If it doesn't, you've wasted all your emotional energy for nothing.
Also do the math. Canada has 1,435 cases out of a population of 38 million. That's 1 in 26,480 Canadians. That's nothing. Yes it may go up, but wait till it gets to like 1 in 10 before freaking out.

Her family in England are a different matter, though. We've got Boris to lead us through this.

I understand your reasoning. The vast majority of cases recover, this thing isn't going to wipe out humanity and should burn out sooner or later. I don't think anyone is denying that.
...But if it does get to someone who has an underlying health condition or is elderly, they are at high risk of dying. We can't have that. And it is a very good reason to be worried, especially if a friend or loved on falls into one of those categories.

I'm more worried for my family in England than for myself. Statistically I'll probably be fine, and i do think i already had it. But my grandparents are in their 80s, my granddad has chest issues and my grandma has dementia. My aunt works in a hospital and her and my dad are stressed. I've been able to isolate pretty well, but they and the rest of the family not so much.
