Nah, i can move it fine but it does hurt. Not sure why it's got so swollen to be honest
It's starting to hurt more now but i think i may have gotten it too cold

RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Also, inb4 Bert talks about your feet.

I wonder if ice is one of things we do because that's what we've been doing for so long and it was never scientifically evaluated. Maybe a nice warm soak is good.

You could have a fracture and still move your foot. Don't put any pressure on the foot - Do not use compression until the swelling goes down - If fractured the compression can move the bone out of place - Of course a proper splint can prevent that if fractured. Doubt you got it too cold.
and yes elevation for sure - Do not keep it level or DOWN if you can avoid that.

Cold helps reduce swelling. Heat is good for circulation and muscle cramps though :)

My foot slid forward and the lump is where i made impact with the table
Wasn't expecting such drastic swelling. It went up basically right away

YEP and the rule I learned and keep on reviewing for hiking and mountain climbing injuries is - NEVER apply heat to any part that is Swelling - Only when the swelling drops do you add heat and then it's best to alternate Cold with Heat - But again not until the swelling drops to some degree. Heat now will only increase the fluids which will drive up the swelling.

Yeah that is an abnormally large amount of swelling. Could just be a fluke reaction. If the swelling doesnt go down by tomorrow night I'd say a doctors visit wouldn't hurt.

Not trying to push you about a possible fracture but I No many who have had fractures and used the foot for weeks even months with on and off problems and then finally found out about the fracture - Same for wrist injury - Also the more you elevate that foot the faster you will likely see the swelling drop.

I caught what seems like an awful flu at the end of last week, with the worst days being on my birthday weekend, on and off illnesses and other minor but irritating injuries which dont even really come to mind, plus period cramps. Of course work irritates my wrists as well. Nothing major but it's just so drawn-out and endless.

Swelling goes down and later comes back - Pain comes and goes. Bones as you know can self set and when angular movements screw that up the setting never holds unless one is inactive - Years spent in places like Afghanistan - The very cool Taliban at the time who never ever went to doctors, often ended up with fractures of legs ankles writs arms, and they were able to self medicate with applied Stuff People all over the planet do no how to take care of fractures - and the rules of when to use cold and heat is common knowledge were it needs to be.
I think the stuff applied drew out fluids but don't quote me on that. Years before Caspian (Chili pepper) was available in tubes from and drug store for pain reduction - People applied it as a hand me down as learned from elders - Frankly the few times I tried that remedy I felt the actual pain was less than that so called cure but friends find it worthwhile -

I should have added - Recently I have had multiple MRI's and X-rays many X-rays - As they search for why my neck is somewhat jammed up with turns somewhat limited - Quick onset and other odd things that do not fit what docs are used to WHEN There is Zero Pain at all. If there was pain that wood be another matter
And in all of that they found a Healed Fracture - Probably from a Mountain climbing fall that self healed over time - They are still studying that one to see if it healed correctly - Again I had no clue because it's been pain free except any swelling I may have confused with just getting older but not enough to limit what I do work or fun wise.
Could have also been from downhill skiing where on occasion I HAVE Raced and Raced and when one pushes Racing one does FALL and Fall and try again to push the speeds and one Falls - Falls have always been fun even when I end up dizzy which could have been the Fracture - With the Cold of the mountain and hours after a fracture that Cold could have been Ideal at the time to keep the swelling down.
So Chili do get a X-Ray because such is just so simple and takes seconds - Hell as a kiddlet I built an X-ray machine and did my foot and hands and hands of friends and have no clue how many friends ended up with cancer as result

well I looked it up: all we have is a rationale, or a plausible case that icepacks are useful, but no actual scientific studies to verify that. There is the known general analgesic effect of cold. There is also a plausible case that any action that would counteract the body's response to injury might not be advisable.

Jesus that tooth tattoo makes me cringe. A few nights ago I was flossing and felt a sharp jagged spot on one of my molars and freaked out for a bit until I remembered it's been there since I accidentally chipped some enamel off when trying to crack open a walnut with my teeth several years ago. Surprisingly it doesn't hurt and never did. One of my goals in life is to die with all 32 teeth still in place. I know a lot of people my age who have lost several to decay. Including this one ni??a only 21 years old who just got two taken out and a root canal in a third.

This is an interesting question. The practice would have to be at least as modern as refrigeration and the ready availability of ice, right? So not too old. There seems to be a good amount of research about how cold affects blood flow, swelling, and inflammation.

Yep. So did ice storehouses and ice deliveries. While storing imported ice is a pretty old practice, I don't know that it would made ice common enough to use on injuries on a regular basis. I'm not sure that having ice on hand to apply to an injury would have been a regular practice. At least I can't track down a definitive history of when icing a wound became something people regularly did.
