In reality, things are functioning pretty normally. Even in Wuhan, where people are staying inside voluntarily, they still go out to shop, etc. It is not completely normal, but it is not the apocalyptic police state that 'Murica makes it out to be.

Being the only person here to have actually traveled to China since the 1990s, and lived there for half a decade, working daily and living in and among the Chinese in a variety of locales, I think I can claim authority on knowing what China is really like, over a fora of people whose window to the world is Google and t he US media.

Fine. I admit it, okay? Chinese food is bad. It tastes awful and is never hygienic. My first weeks in China were just constant vomiting until I had to do the sensible thing and start eating non-Chinese food. Even at my wedding, I insisted on having a foreign catering company prepare the food.
As much as I disdain McDonald's, I have to admit it is at least edible and possibly saved my life in China since I could usually go to one instead of eating local food.
