The akinator from a mathematical perspective:
Optimally, it tries to find questions that divide the remaining answer pool into two, so with twenty questions it can get an accuracy of (.5^20), basically if there are 1,048,576 people in its database, it can guess correctly every time (if it knows enough facts about the people in the database to ask the most optimal questions).

Well it works because there are not nearly 1,048,576 entries in its database. And actually the more general the question the better, because it more evenly divides up the answer pool. ie "is your character male or female" is a much better question than anything more specific.
