It's almost as bad as a Windows Mobile phone. The only thing it could do well was e-mail, and now any idiot can get push e-mail so that feature is far from unique. Every "app" available for the phone looks either like the makers never thought the app would be used on a tiny phone or a knockoff of some standard iPhone app.
These Canadians need to give up the ghost and just get an iPhone or something.

I suppose there was a time when businesses only communicated using text e-mail, but that's changed. Furthermore, I don't know why anybody would buy a phone that you can only use if your business also buys a mail server for your BlackBerry.
Maybe using old stuff and paying a lot for it is a fetish, like leasing a rotary phone.

The blackberry's selling point is the encryption they use for their data traffic and, I'm not certain, phone calls to other blackberries. And ofcourse the fact that if you lock the phone and have it protected with a keycode, there is no way to retrieve the data stored (full disk encryption) on it, and all data gets wiped on several incorrect tries on the keycode.

The only encryption they offer is for e-mail, and most e-mail providers offer encryption nowadays.

1. Through a fully-private and encrpyted VPN that tunnels and filters all data (including cellular voice)
2. Through a fully-private webserver that tunnels and filters all email and HTTP(s)
3. Through a fully-private Blackberry-hosted plan
4. Through common carrier networks using HTTP(s) over their GSM (??) protocols
…and those first two can filter any content or protocols. All but the last method use a shitty Blackberry web browser. The technology isn’t leading edge, but it was leading edge within the mobile market.
This was all from memory, and a year old; it might not be exactly like this, now.
