He should be imprisoned until he no longer poses a threat to the public. He should not be murdered or kept behind bars longer than is necessary (necessary in this case could be until he dies). His crime is awful, but he is not an individual with all his marbles in place.
Also, what good does punishment do? It doesn't deter others from crime (besides, someone who would commit an act such as this does not think of the penalties). It doesn't undo what he did. He does nothing but feed upon people's thirst for vengeance.

Punishment does not deter others in this type of crime, because people who commit these kinds of crimes do not think rationally. In other words, it doesn't deter others for the same reason you could never be confident that he wouldn't reoffend.

I don't think anyone has the right to take away someones life. Although, the situation is not black and white and situations vary from case to case. I also think that some people are truly the scum of humanity and don't deserve to live. Where does one draw the line though? how do we distinguish the criteria for death penalty? killing 10 or 100 people? in what method to which they killed a person? the kinds of people they killed?

Studies suggest again and again that punishments do not deter people from committing crimes. It seems like it would, but it does not.
The only effect imprisonment has on crime is that while incarcerated, those people don't commit crimes (except in prison, but we don't count that i guess).
