Topic: New virus is infectious in incubation stage (1-14 days)

Anonymous A started this discussion 6 years ago #96,117

They screened people for fever at airports, but since you can have it without any symptoms for two weeks, the screening is of little use. It's already all over China and there's rumors of mutations.

This is it you guys. It's coming to your neighborhood.

The Emperor, ofc. Chaos inevitably leads to death, mutation or insanity for most of its followers. Even the followers who "win" and become daemon princes end up as slaves that are extensions of their patron god's will.

The Emperor wasn't perfect but he was much better than what he was fighting against.

The problem is it already has mutated - same family as SARS and MERS but brand new. On the plus side, it's not as infectious as Measles for example, as it's a physically heavier virus, so doesn't move through the air as easily.

A secondary mutation would really suck ass I've heard though. Like they say it could put a vaccine, currently at the very miraculous best estimate, a month away... It could put the progress on that back to zero.

Anonymous M replied with this 6 years ago, 7 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,085,725

@1,085,720 (A)
I did. Your numbers look wrong. More importantly, the two things being compared aren't remotely similar. Seasonal flu is a common, even predictable, thing from year to year. Many people have had some strain of influenza and each year millions of people get inoculated against it. You're comparing a common virus that has and does spread through tens or hundreds of millions of people (again, no idea where the numbers on "flu" you have come from) with a relatively new strain of coronavirus that has, as far as I can find, 7,711 confirmed cases and 170 deaths.

I know it's fun to write down numbers and pretend like the difference between two things is staggering and important, but I don't think the comparison is a useful one at all. Comparing with a similar thing, like SARS for instance, would be a more apt comparison.

Anonymous M replied with this 6 years ago, 7 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,085,739

So far SARS is winning the numbers game with 774 deaths out of 5237 cases. That's a case fatality rate of 14.8% to the 2.2% we have going for the current outbreak. Obviously the numbers will be worse once you take into account the imaginary scenarios you've made up though.

Anonymous A (OP) replied with this 6 years ago, 14 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,085,743

@previous (M)

That's not a imaginary scenario, why do you think china is rushing to build a new hospital in 10 days? Because they need it obviously. There's also still a lot of people in a critical condition, and besides, what makes ncov scary is that it's very possible it's contagious in the incubation period.

Anonymous M replied with this 6 years ago, 1 hour later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,085,746

@previous (A)
Yes. China is building new hospitals while sending food, supplies, and medical personnel. By all accounts they are taking this seriously and working to prevent exactly the scenario you are imagining will result.

You seem to be projecting greater numbers based on the opposite of what people are doing.

You also seem to be worried about the number of people infected being greater than estimated by saying the virus might be contagious before symptoms present themselves. Is that based on anything founded in fact? According to a report from the AP, Chinese health officials confirmed cases of the virus and informed the World Health Organization on Dec. 31. And by Jan. 12, Chinese scientists had sequenced the virus’ genetic makeup and shared it with WHO. So this virus has been a known quantity for almost a month now and detailed information about it has been available for weeks. We will certainly see the number of cases rise, but at this point the whole world knows about it and is in a position to take informed and appropriate measures. By all accounts the those measures are being taken. Everyone is prepared for a new confirmed cases and has measures in place to prevent exactly the scenario you seem to be worried about.

There seems to be more than just suspicion that it's contagious before the symptoms show, I've read conflicting reports but it seems to be the case. 5 million people left the city before the quarantine was put in place, since it's sort of a Chinese new year and Christmas at the same time over there and people are traveling. If it really is az contagious as they say, somewhat more than the average flu is, plus if it's contagious before the symptoms show, then we really are going to see a huge epidemic. As who has said, the risk is high. The number of infected reflect those who got the virus few days ago, some got it two weeks ago.

Anonymous M replied with this 6 years ago, 45 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #1,085,764

@previous (A)
That's a lot of "if" scenarios that you have to pile on top of each other to get there. There really isn't much known for certain about how rapidly it spreads right now. In the meantime, China is taking measures to contain it and countries around the world are putting safeguards and travel restrictions in place as needed.

If you want to speculate about it spreading to millions or mutating into some doomsday virus that's great, but I don't see any evidence of that happening right now. It sounds like you're just finding things to worry about.
