these early attempts to apply science to the phenomenon of the human mind were obviously limited by the lack of technology to study the living brain. as in any science, models of reality are developed to try to usefully explain what is observed. Any scientist knows that models of reality are not reality itself. We entertain the models as far as we judge them to be useful.

I don't think those are great metrics for mental health. Substance abuse and theft are really common and have upsides too. That doesn't make them a recipe for mental wellness.
