Gay people fall in love. Gay people want to spend their lives together. Marriage is seen as the ultimate commitment to your partner. There is no logical reason to not allow homosexual couples to have the same access to the legal institute of marriage. It comes with protections and guarantees that extend beyond commitment.
There are many horro stories of gays not being able to visit their partner in the hospitals and such. I know someone who wasn't able to visit their dog at the vet because their partner had dropped it off and used his name.
As to why you can't read the news without reading about some homes tying the knot is because there are many people, mostly religious, in this country who are full of fear, bigotry, and hate. They spend millions each year to try and stop gay marriage from happening because two dudes kissing makes them uncomfortable.
Gays are gonna keep loving and fucking and it won't stop no matter what the religious bigots do. Gay people will continue to be born, so even mass extermination won't work.
