Betelgeuse started dimming in October and may or may not be about to go supernova and die. In the next 100,000 years for sure. Then there was a burst of gravitational waves of unknown origin detected in the vicinity of Betelgeuse in the last day or so. I'm enjoying this Reddit draad about the whole thing. If Betelgeuse goes supernova, it would be as bright as a full moon!

Well... our view of it. Because of the great distance involved, it could have exploded back when the Golden Horde was overrunning what would eventually be the city of Moscow and we would have to wait until just about now to be able to see it.

I know that it takes awhile for light/information to reach us, but am surprised that Betelgeuse is so far away that it is that many centuries. Thought it would be closer for some reason
