“I never understood wind. I know windmills very much, I have studied it better than anybody. I know it is very expensive. They are made in China and Germany mostly, very few made here, almost none, but they are manufactured, tremendous — if you are into this — tremendous fumes and gases are spewing into the atmosphere. You know we have a world, right?”

How does someone "know windmills very much" if they don't understand wind? Wouldn't that be a really key concept in the study of windmills?

I think it's deeper and more disturbing than that. He's pointing out how much our general understanding of wind is lacking. If we understood wind, and the dangers of wind, we never would have created windmills causing the unknown dangers of wind to be released into the atmosphere. But we are ignorant. Very ignorant of wind and windmills. He's just trying to be polite to the scientists.

Put more simply, there are known unknowns and unknown unknowns. For Trump, wind is a known unknown. For the rest of us, it's an unknown unknown. Scary.
