After some googling, I have decided that the English waterways narrowboat life is for me!! How do I find one for sale?

Its amazing isn't it? I've been thinking about it for the past year and have finally put a plan together which involves becoming debt free, lowering my carbon footprint, decorating my flat, remortgaging my flat to buy a narrowboat or barge and living on it.

Did you know you dont have to pay moring fees if you travel a certain distance in your boat every two weeks. And the waterways extent all across England. I've worked out I can easy boat between Stratford and Lee Valley and still easily commute to work.

@OP

There are some great help YouTube videos on looking for a boat and living on one and its actually fairly cheap. Never buy a new boat but a cheap one can be around £16000 and you can refit it yourself.

Personally I intend to remortgage my flat for around £60000, spend some on a new bathroom and kitchen then spend about £40000 or under on a boat

One of the things I'm most looking forward to is having a wood burning stove on the boat keeping me warm during winter and salvage wood from the woodland near the canals.

Hmm. It sounds really cool. I am serious. So how much would a new one cost, just for comparison? And would I have yo become an English cotizen, or could anforeigner do it?

Sounds amazing really. How do you cook and shit living on a boat?

Legally you would need legal residence here but the best thing about being a boat person is you can just disappear on the waterways as its largely unregulated or checked. It's almost like being a traveller but on water and the people and communities are nicer.

Fosel fuel stoves but they also have large batteries that charge from the engine, solar panels and charge stations.

That's the rub. There are many different systems like a cassette toilet, compost toilet or even and incinerator toilet but at the end of the day it's not as comfy or convenient as a regular toilet but that's how it is. I guess one just needs to readjust their life accordingly like shitting at work more often

Can you just sit on the gunwhales and drop a load overboard? Also, what if two narrowboata approach each other on a canal only wide enough for one?

Erik !jzYkdX7lIw replied with this 6 years ago, 6 minutes later, 36 minutes after the original post[^] [v] #1,079,464

Canals are wide enough for several boats. In theory you can shit overboard but its against the rules of the waterways as theirs no current to flush away your shite. However, once the sun goes down and your sneaky you might be able to.

Those boats are quite short. The average one is double that length

Those are locks or bridges. They have to be narrow and boats take turns. A normal canal is quite wide
