Anonymous B is right. Helpfulness isn't relevant, using emojis in a formal context is wrong and cringeworthy.

generalisations should be beneath you dw. what's happened here is that you've sadly forgotten that not everyone on the fora can speak dutch, and you are now trying to cover for your jumping to conclusions.

In fairness, it's not exactly a fair comparison. As languages go, English is very dominant. If you may forgive me for being a bit direct, there's a reason you and I are conversing in English right now rather than Dutch or another language. English is, arguably the lingua franca in the world. At least currently.

Compared to your countrymen or, say, the Chinese, my countrymen have much less incentive to learn a foreign language. They already speak a major lingua franca. There is much less pressure on them to learn a language for career advancement or ease of communication when abroad. If an Englishman wants to work in an intenational industry, English is usually the standard expectation already. If They want to go abroad, some basic English will usually serve them okay in most tourist destinations.

Now, on a personal note, I do agree with you that it's a bloody shame that many UKEnglish might not learn a foreign language just because they're already speaking a dominant language. But, equally, I can't exactly blame them for being like that given the current situation.

But, for whatever it's worth, dw, I did go to a foreign country for a short while and learned a little of language. I'm not good at it by any means, but I was able to be somewhat communicative. It was a fantastic experience and I agree that more of my fellow UKBrits should try it.

I missed this post. Of course English is the Lingua Carta (as evidenced by it being used on minichan.org). Still, the vast majority of people don't speak English, and I imagine the vast majority of those that do don't speak it very well.

Most immigrants from the anglosphere or otherwise who get a job in a different country learn the local language ime, unless you enjoy not understanding what anyone says around the office. If I got a job in Germany I definitely wouldn't want to rely on English to get around lol.

I don't think English people need to all start learning a new language (and if they do, it shouldn't be dutch), but the seemingly very prevalent idea that it's less worthwhile to do for English people sounds ridiculous to me.

I just think it's kind of funny that they typically can't even (or maybe just assume they can't?) translate simple words in even the closest languages to their own. Like I dont speak German but I'll probably be able to guess what a word means if the spelling is similar to a Dutch or English word.

Of course these are generalisations, I even knew a northern irish lad who learned Dutch in a month or two. Oh and also a regular Irish in a similar timeframe. that one changed the spelling of his name to be dutch
