Think of the dead centers of the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. The first is the North Pole, and the second is the South Pole. Therefore, if there were an East Pole and West Pole, they would have to be located in the dead centers of their respective hemispheres using the same logic.

The ‘East’ Pole would be located on the equator at 90 degrees East longitude. That is the center of the Eastern Hemisphere.

That would be a point in the Indian Ocean. Closest land is Pulau Island off the west coast of Sumatra, approximately 400 nautical miles to the ENE.

The ‘West’ Pole would be located on the equator at 90 degrees West longitude. That is the center of the Western Hemisphere.

That would be a point in the Pacific Ocean. Closest land is Isla Genovesa in the Galapagos Islands, approximately 20 nautical miles to the NNE.

AND DON’T FORGET, there are two more hemispheres in a sphere if you want to complete this in three dimensions, for a total of 6 poles. This gets even sillier.

The other two you can call the Front Pole and the Back Pole. Front because you’re viewing the compass rose as you normally would, from the front with the west on the left side and the east on the right side.

The ‘Front’ or ‘Anterior’ Pole would be located on the equator at the Prime Meridian (0 degrees W or E, take your pick). That is the center of the ‘Front’ or ‘Anterior’ Hemisphere.

That would be a point in the Atlantic Ocean. Closest land is Takoradi, Ghana about 300 nautical miles to the NNW.

The ‘Back’ or ‘Posterior’ (haha) Pole would be located on the equator where the International Date Line crosses it (at that point, the IDL coincides with 180 degrees W or E, take your pick). That is the center of the ‘Back’ or ‘Posterior’ Hemisphere.

That would be a point in the Pacific Ocean. Closest land is Howland Island about 225 nautical miles to the ENE.

Now you have the location of all SIX ‘poles’ covered. There is no celestial significance to anything but the north or south pole. The other four ‘poles’ are merely cartographic creations based on the Prime Meridian (of longitude), and given that the equator is halfway between the north and south pole. The north and south poles (and the equator) are established because of the rotation of the earth on an imaginary axis (which runs through the north and south poles).
