Topic: What i don't understand about Buddhism

Anonymous A started this discussion 6 years ago #95,152

Why would I want to break out of the cycle of death and rebirth? Obviously Buddha didn't live in the times that we do and life must have been a terrible thing in his time. I wonder if i should travel to some Buddhist monastery and ask about how not to break free of the cycle but rather make sure ti come back as a human.

Because life is suffering.

Yeh but I ain't suffering right now, the only suffering going on right now is the possibility that moments like this won't be around forever and ever.

It's like in that movie the shining. I would have played with those twins forever and ever. Sounds like fun.

samsara - our conditioned existence in the perpetual cycle of habitual tendancies - and nirvana - genuine freedom from such an existence - are nothing but different manifestations of a basic continuum. So this continuity of consciousness is always present. This is the meaning of tantra.

in Mahayana the goal isn't so much as to break free from samsara as it is to continue to help other living beings in the realm as a Bodhisattva
not all of Buddhism is concerned centrally with Nirvana, satori, etc but the themes do serve well as relayed thru the parable of the burning house
also your experience isn't universal (or permanent, watch out) and suffering is so idg your pov. the goal isn't to cease suffering but to accept it as a Noble Truth
