Topic: Is it true that narcissists are only narcissistic to cover up their self hatred?

I've read that narcissism is the result of the ego trying to protect us from our real opinions of ourselves. When the ego has nothing to work with as it maintains our self image, it exaggerates with extremism, makes sure we never compare ourselves because then we might just figure out that we really dislike ourselves.
Is that while a narcissist might pay a heavy price for the way things turned out, there's something he gets for his money if you catch my drift. A narcissist might lack something mysterious that the books call "the ideal" within himself, he instead sees it within other people. So he's surrounded by beauty i imagine, that's not such a bad deal.
I recall reading about a psychoanalyst and his narcissistic patient, his patient said that he didn't get it, that he's exactly like his lover... That he's so beautiful and perfect like his lover yet still he's unhappy. He's unhappy because he lacks this ideal within himself and he doesn't realize he's chasing after the ideal that he sees within his lover.
I'd say it's better to look at a painting that's beautiful, rather than eating it and forget all about it.
