It was probably an evil eel. Some birds are evil. Mice are particularly evil. Cats really keep us focused on realizing the unseen evils all around us: moths, cans of tuna fish, bits of especially evil lint. String is full of evil.

Cause I threw it in the trash while it was still moving, felt sorry for it and googled how long it can live on land and it turns out that they can live on land a hour or two. I went and took it out of the trash, tool a couple of steps further and gently placed it into the ocean, watched it swim away.
They only bring birds, mice, and such to you if they think you aren't eating enough. It is a misconception that it is a gift. A cat does it bc it is worried about you.
