Check the dock and clean it out. There may be a limescale buildup preventing the kettle from switching on. I love my kettles, I have 4 of them in case one breaks. It's good to perform proper maintenance on them. For limescale build up, pour in some white vinegar and dilute it with water and bring it to boil. Let it stand for half an hour or so. Then swish the water round and pour it out. Rinse the kettle out a few times and you're set. Also, ignore the max fill line. My Tesco Rapid Boil Kettle has a max fill line halfway up. This is ludicrous! It's mainly so you can't sue them if something goes wrong. I've been rebelling and filling above the max fill line for years and been OK.
Kettles are a necessity in the UK. Every shop sells electric kettles (some for £5)! This is different from American culture where they boil water in microwaves or in a saucepan! This is completely absurd! The electric kettle is probably one of the greatest inventions of all time and I feel privileged to live in a country where they are freely available. America: you can keep your guns, we'll keep our kettles!

I own multiple Espresso machines and they recommend Citric acid, as a means to clean limescale. Something I have yet to try.

Because they are more concerned with their guns than making a cup of tea.

You should buy a spare kettle.

kettles are like the only devices where you can be sure the switch breaks before the thing itself does

I've heard it's because we gave a less high current or voltage or something, and so our electric kettles are less fast and less efficient

idk, mine is still faster than a microwave and pours better and I don't have to use a thermometer. peak efficiency
