Topic: “Gumbo” does not mean “soup”

Indy started this discussion 6 years ago #94,631

Gumbo is a specific type of stew from French Louisiana. It must be based on a roux. It has other specific characteristics. You cannot just make a random soup and call is gumbo. I grew up here. I know more than Google McDoogle.

Nope. Do you just sit and make up shit here all day?

'Gumbo' is derived from the Old French gumue (meaning "soup") and Latin bo (meaning "also soup").

> I'm going to make a Christmas gumbo which has turkey and stuffing.

My Gumbo from left over Turkey stock and Carcass and such Was FANTASTIC - Perhaps the Stock was a weeeeWEEEEEEWeeee bit to Rich - Should have thinned it just a bit but HOT DAMN

I also made a batch using NO Fat Roux just 4 the fun if it - May end up eating some from freezer 2nite after I come in from Dancing the NITE Away

Alas with almost 8 hours of pure Bliss Surfing my Ocean a Blue I crashed my foot into Rocks and only hurt one little Toe but damn now I concotted a recipe of Lidocaine and Neosporin in hopes it will get be thru the Nite

Now about Soup vs Stew - It's inbetween or More or Less depending on how one makes it OR on how one eats it - White Rice in the Middle of the bowl which is standard (SOP) and you want the Liquid surrounding it to be just think enough yet thin enough so it cums down to Roux Ratio and the Chef Math to pull a great Gumbo off.

I fully Doubt Indy who may live in area state wise famous for Gumbos to have a clue about what is proper - I base this on watching him on Youtube years ago when he was in 25 years of study to learn hot to speak French -

His cooking lesson/dinner was Indian Chicken Curry - This is NO BS - He put Chicken in a Skillet - Heated it up a bit then dumped THIS into the Skillet and called it Chicken Curry

He said he took years of cooking lessons but that school teaching him that in India they take commercial so called CURRY Powder and that is what Indian cooking is all about?

Just about out of here for day Hell had time for one post and it was a reply to Cathy on TC where I got his approval for a Poem I composed

The Strange And Special Net

A Poem by Syntax

Whose net is that? I think I know.
Its owner is quite angry though.
She was cross like a dark potato.
I watch her pace. I cry hello.

She gives her net a shake,
And screams I've made a bad mistake.
The only other sound's the break,
Of distant waves and birds awake.

The net is strange, special and deep,
But she has promises to keep,
Tormented with nightmares she never sleeps.
Revenge is a promise a girl should keep.

She rises from her cursed bed,
With thoughts of violence in her head,
A flash of rage and she sees red.
Without a pause I turned and fled.

Is stew a subset of soup, or is soup a subset of stew? ?
