And what's more, it was founded by an ardent Unionist (Arthur Guinness) who wanted Ireland to stay under British rule. In the 1980s the company actually considered abandoning the 'Irish' theme altogether, moving fully to the UK and branding themselves as a British beer. (Which they basically are now anyway, thanks to Diageo.)
