A friend of mine had a few cats. I was hanging out at his place one day in the garage while my friend was off doing something in the house. One of his cats walked in, sniffed a wall, then looked over and stared me down as he sprayed the wall while locking eyes with me.

Some of the cats got into territory marking contests once in a while, especially in places outside the house. I figure he must have known that smell was from one of the other toms who had marked that spot before. I got along great with all the cats there. They were all absolute darlings. It was just odd that he looked over at me with such calm disdain as if to say, "Did you know about this? Did you think this was okay? I'm going to show you how this wall is supposed to smell and you're going to watch."

He sprayed the wall inside or outside?

Inside of a garage that was separate from the house. It was pretty much being used as a big storage shed at that point. Some of the cats would hang out in there to nap or when it was raining.

I barely noticed. The garage already smelled like musty piss from the cats spraying in there before. I'm sure it didn't improve the odor but it didn't really make it any worse.

Maybe they like the smell of cat piss, or they smell like cat piss so bad that they don't even notice it.

The garage was only used by humans once in a while and mostly just to store tools and shit. When we went in there to do anything we would have the huge garage door open which caught the wind in the open doorway and aired it out a lot.

I'm not fond of the smell, but it certainly seems to bother me less than it does other people.
