Topic: My car is making kind of a groaning noise

Meta !Sober//iZs started this discussion 6 years ago #94,488

When driving. Not when it's stationary so that means its likely in the drivetrain somewhere. If its the transmission that's okay because I still have 14 months warranty on the rebuilt transmission that cost slightly more than the car is actually worth (which makes the rest of the car technically worth -$200 now).

I would like to get my guaranteed 2 years/24,000 miles out of my transmission. If I get that, I will be happy to put the car in the junkyard (which is where it belonged some time ago but I digress). But if I end up putting more money into it, I'll have to drive the car even longer to get my money's worth out of that. I could go buy a new car that isn't completely fucked and dying, but this heap was paid for long ago and for the price of even the cheapest new car, I could have the one I have completely rebuilt with money left over.

Meta IF you are with AAA?
They have a list of highly recommend Mechanics. One can look at your situation and you personal needs and advise you on what 2Do.

A dance friend recently told me AAA saved a car she was going to junk.

For your sexy groan do this. Pour a bottle of Sulfur Molasses, into your gas tank and be prepared for thrills beyond your wildest imagination.

No those make a squealing sound. I redid them just last year too.

That's probably what's wrong.

I'm glad you ruled out haunting or demon possession straight away.

Externally hosted imageUpdate it's the alternator. the groaning/whining sound gets louder the more electrical stuff is on (headlights, A/C, etc). The volt meter is actually acting like a tachometer, making huge jumps up and down with engine RPM. The lights also dim when you're not going fast. It's putting out just under 12 volts at idle, meaning actually the battery is discharging when I'm at stoplights.

So I ordered the very cheapest Chinese alternator I could find and will install it tomorrow. At $99, it's half the price of a rebuilt one at Autozone. Nothing but the finest will do for my clapped out POS. It's a shame none of you live close enough to give me a lift when this off brand Chinese fake alternator sets the car on fire soon ?

It was a breeze to install. Now I get a smooth steady 14.5 volts with the A/C, headlights, and stereo all on at full blast! Looks like Meta wins again! ?

Nice! It's so satisfying when the cheap stuff actually does the job.
