Topic: I just bought a new Kensington trackball, fora!

Externally hosted imageIt's actually the same one I bought back in 2011, but that one got old and worn out and started fucking up and double clicking the past year so I threw it out. I got a Logitech M570 thumb trackball to replace it but the thumb ball is just not as precise. I also tried a "gaming" mouse (Logitech G402) and while it feels nice in the hand, I just don't like sliding a mouse back and forth all the time.

The really exciting thing though is they come in different colors now. The one on the right is the one I got back in 2011 and the only color they had back then. The new one is going to be the gray one in the middle!!! It comes in Sunday and I can't wait! ??

That's pretty cool. It looks like a spaceship. Is this piece of equipment part of how you maintain your reputation as one of the fastest moderators on the internet?

Yes! They are a lot faster because you can flick the ball hard and jump from one end of the screen to the other instantly. You also have an infinite "mousepad". I really have no idea why these never caught on. It's like the mouse version of manual transmission: 5% of people love it and the rest hate it and don't get the point.

If you think the Kensington looks like a spaceship, you should see my first trackball, the Logitech Marble Mouse. I got it in 2009 I think. I still have it somewhere. It's a good one but the only problem is it has no scroll ring. You can map the tiny buttons on the side to scroll up/down but it just isn't the same.

The next thing I want to try is trackpoint. There are unfortunately only two options as far as I can tell for desktop use: the Unicomp EnduraPro or the Lenovo Thinkpad USB keyboard with trackpoint. I already have a Unicomp and I do like it a lot but I can't really justify buying another one just for the trackpoint. The problem with the Lenovo is it's a tiny laptop keyboard with USB and I'm more comfortable with a full size keyboard for serious writing. Laptop keyboards feel cramped and too flat for me. Also it's got the chiclet keys and I like the old style tapered side keys better. I'm really intrigued by the idea of not having to take my hands off the keyboard to move the cursor around.

I think it's cool that you geek out on the functionality. Trackballs really do feel a lot better in terms of fine control over the cursor in my opinion. I've used a trackball before, but I've never had a mouse with a scroll ring. That looks like something that might be fun to play around with.

The scroll ring works really well because it's out of the way but also really large and close to your fingers. You have your thumb on left click, ring finger on right click, and index and middle fingers on the ball. You can easily take the middle finger off the ball and scroll while still keeping a finger on the ball and both click buttons. The scroll ring doesn't have detents so it spins freely enabling silent smooth scrolling. It's much better than the scroll wheel on the M570 which has just a regular mouse scroll wheel.

The only real problem with trackballs as a whole is you do have to clean the balls and the little rollers every so often. Just like in the old days with ball mice.

"gaming" mouse

I put it in quotes because there is really nothing special about it. It's just if you want a decent mouse nowadays you have to get a "gaming" one with retarded shit like an LED Logitech G logo on it. Why do I want a light up G logo on a mouse??? You can't even see it because my hand covers it up!

It's installed! Trackballs, Minichan, and Ron Paul, just like old times ?

Jesus I forgot how nice these are when they aren't 8 years old and completely worn out. The ball is absolutely smooth, no resistance at all. The scroll ring is tight. The only minor thing is the wrist rest doesn't fit as securely as the one on my 2011 model did. But it's not a big deal. I really should buy a couple more in case they stop making these by the time this one is worn out in 2028...
