Its costly both in $$$ terms and time to replace an expired/lost license. For voting purposes, not everyone drives. The most likely people not to drive are poor minorities who live in cities, the group of people who conveniently also are the least likely to vote Republican. Politically it's easier to just snuff out their votes via strict voter ID laws than it is to convince them to vote R so that's what red state legislatures have done.

It took me several months to get all my information together to get my license again. I had been able to sqeak by with a copy of my Cali ID to get work for several years, and didn't need to show anything more to get insured while in Texas. I had lost my actual ID 4 or more years ago. Well, it's a Jewish guy interviewing white college kids in Berkeley and asking them if they think ID voting laws are racist and why. They have typical privileged white liberal answers: "Blacks are poor and don't have the internet" "Blacks are too fucking stupid to be able to use the internet" "Stupid blacks don't know where the DMV is" "Stupid poor blacks can't get to the DMV even if they could figure out where it is" etc.
Then he goes to Harlem and asks people who happen to have more melanin if they have ID. They all have ID. He asks them if they know where the DMV is, and if they are able to get there. They know where it is and are able to get there. Then he asks them if they have the internet and know how to use it. He apologizes for sounding so demeaning and racist. It turns out that these people have internet access, and know how to use it! When he explains that these are the reasons that privileged white liberals think stupid poor blacks don't have and can't get ID, they look sad and say that privileged white liberals are ignorant.

You should watch it.

I'm just flabbergasted that some anon thinks his experience in one state means people everywhere else is lying about the ID problem. I had a client whose only way to get an ID was to have a judge sign an order establishing the client's identification so that he could then go get his ID. There was no other way. I can assure Anonymous A that I didn't go to this effort because it was a fun use of my, my client, or the judge's time.

For those with negative experiences with government officials, warrants for their arrest, high reinstatement fees on their drivers license, there is also a decent chance they will not try to get an ID or show their ID to vote out of fear. The ID laws go into effect without education about the fact that state IDs can be obtained even with a suspended license, that you won't be arrested for an outstanding warrant, etc.

The other problem is making policy changes that disparately impact certain demographics and depress voting rates without a prior showing of why the change is necessary. Demanding photo ID is by and large a new requirement that has only been introduced by Republicans, and not in response to any increase in voter fraud (there is no such increase and no actual problem with voter fraud except foreign government's influence, which is suspiciously not affected by this poll tax on blacks and low-income people).

First of all, that hardly ever happens. Secondly, we don't have that here and there is very little voter fraud.

You can snag medical records usually and that can work as a proof of identity. I think mine cost a few dollars for the printing fee

Edit: I've lost my I'd and social about 10 times in my life, and it's always a huge god damn hassle, but I'm pretty sure the solutions I found work. Apparently there's a lifetime limited amount of SS cards you can get and I'm pretty close

What why do you have so many kinds of ID. Just make ID cards mandatory, make them like $30 and have everyone stop whining

How about YOU 'quit whining" about what we do as Americans?

Quit being so damn jealous concerning our superiority.

Don't worry...when one natural disasters or similar sort of terrible calamity detroys your nation's tiny bankroll we shall save you.

I have had one bad experience ever voting and it was with an elderly poll worker who somehow crossed my name off the list as someone who already voted. They gave me an official ballot anyway and it went in the legit box not the useless provisional ballot box so there is a chance that someone lies and voted in my name but more likely it was just an error on the poll workers part

This is in California if anyone cares. They just ask for your name and address then they mark you off in this book and give you a ballot

What's surprising about this whole thing is that a federal form of identification, the social security card, actually has no one uniform set of requirements for replacement across states. Different states have different requirements. Hence people who shit in buckets, live in vans, and/or vote Republican, declaring with certainty YOU'RE WRONG! about the fact that poor people in some states really and truly can be caught in a catch-22 when trying to get "valid." It's a really, really pernicious part of the cycle of poverty in some places.

Contact local legal aid, law school clinic, or other low-income legal services. They will likely be experienced with this problem and any workaround that may exist.

I'm really surprised fingerprints or biometrics haven't caught on yet to replace SSNs and whatnot. It seems really antiquated to keep up with all these scraps of paper when everyone already has their own permanent, unique, unlosable, identification all over their body ?

Standard pre employment paperwork for any job in the country.

Does it still say on the SSN Card-

'Not to be used for identification'?

I suppose that refers to that as a primary form of ID like a DL...But for many years it's been accepted as a secondary form of ID when two or more forms are requested..

I ask the question because I currently cannot find my ssc atm to check..

I aint going to read through all the replies BUT Now really starting in 2020 PEOPLE will have to carry a REAL ID card (IF They want to travel Domestically and I believe Train travel is on the list for sometime after 2020- Back not long ago when I renewed my DMV it could have included the new USGov Real ID information - I was clueless and should have asked why they wanted to know if I wanted it INCLUDED In my DMV- Does require a lot more proof like the Birth Cert and two forms of proof of residency

So I will get around to getting my DMV updated early next year - To much on my plate to hang at DMV this month

In USA without the Real ID Gov issued A Passport WORKS 4 Domestic travel.

Bottom line is DMV offer the Real ID to those who do not drive. Or incorporate it in the DMV card.
