It's just a term for the same bullshit people have been doing all along in order to define their self-image and relation to society. You can identify as a math nerd, or a firefighter, or a mother, or a heavy metal fan, or whatever. Some people want to identify with different things they feel close to. I don't think surgery or biology is a necessary condition for identifying with a group. Some kid who gets back surgery so they can walk normally probably doesn't have any qualms about identifying as able-bodied later in life even though they needed surgery to get there. I'm sure plenty of foster parents still identify as parents after raising kids regardless of the biological truth that they didn't actually make those kids.
It would be pretty cool if you could undergo surgery to be a cyborg firefighter though.

Oh its not necessary but I'm saying transgenders do get surgery which is mostly unique to their group. Also identifying as able-bodied makes no sense, either you have an able body or you have a handicap
