Well judging by the fact that he led a religiously motivated terrorist group, I'd say probably he was probably both austere and religious. Maybe @OP thinks he was a happy-go-lucky atheist but I certainly don't think so.

I think it's more he's mad about the tone, but like if you read the WaPo article they were talking about perception of him BEFORE founding ISIS, and how that shifted quite abruptly. They are not exactly sympathetic towards ISIS of course.

Comedy movie idea: he really was a happy-go-lucky atheist, but he accidentally fell into leading ISIS and couldn't admit his real beliefs or they'd kill him. The only one that’s expensive is WSJ it’s like 20 bucks a month or something ridiculous... you can get NYT for like 5 bucks a month as opposed to 10 if you just threaten to cancel your sub
