This just proves the EU is a malicious power. The elites will not let us leave, they should have rejected the extension.
We must leave the EU, Germany's 4th attempt to control Europe.

It's okay, me and my mate Liam will hang around Parliament throwing racial slurs at Pakis and gypos until our exit is guaranteed. We'll rid our country of these filth eventually, insha'Allah.

Britain would have left the EU over 6 months ago if Boris Johnson and the ERG hadn't continuously voted against May's withdrawal agreement for their own political self-interests. But yeah, keep on blaming the foreigners, it saves having to actually think about things.

Said the citizen of what was until fairly recently the biggest empire the planet had ever seen. Damn those uppity Krauts.

What gets me is the deals are fucking identical pretty much right? I won't claim to have read either in their entirety (obviously) but flicking through the overviews and summaries etc they seem so similar. They're the same and yet ERG cunts (particularly Moggy) were strongly against the first iteration. It's fucking nuts.

Added to that is Boris Johnson repeatedly saying over the last month that his deal is "the only way to leave the EU". Um, nope. May's deal would have left too, because it was all but identical to Johnson's (with one small difference: Patron Saint of Brexit Nigel Farage never described May's deal as just as bad as staying in the EU, as he did about Johnson's). Such a pity Boris and his Oxford Bullingdon Club (tell us more about those insidious European "elites" Svet) voted against it.
But hey, these are all just pesky details. Let's just continue to blame the foreigners.

Do you mean to tell me Britain still has not Brexited??
I thought it was guaranted to happen last week. How can you people hold your heads up in public now?
This is become quite a circus of ineptitude.

It seems that all today's conservatives have to do is blame a nebulous "elite" and they get a free pass.
"Oh, sorry me and my cronies ruined the first attempt at a deal and then only managed to get one that's virtually the same, the elites made us do it!"
"Oh, sorry I told those huge lies and kept changing my mind. It was the elites, I swear!".
Fuck...

It's a Trumpian tactic. Just as he convinces his hick followers that "the establishment" is out to shaft them (because billionaire Manhattan trust fund babies are not the establishment apparently), so Johnson, Gove, Mogg and the rest of the Etonian set have successfully convinced a poorly-educated underclass that "the elites" are out to strip them of their wealth and autonomy.

Arguing with conservatives is weird because when you point out that *famous contemporary or historical politician they agree with* is actually an elite, they do incredible feats of mental gymnastics to redefine "elite" in such a way that it ultimately means "prominent liberal politicians I disagree with". Which is not what the word "elite" means. Trying to play this verbal shell game to claim the mantle of populism while screwing over poor people by cutting social services to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy is incredibly duplicitous and unfortunately quite effective.

Well, yeah. It's bigger than them. It's a classical authoritarian tactic to scare people with a threatening but usually vague "other". It just pisses me off how it works in an age where information is so accessible. It's very easy to Google exactly how Boris has lied for his own gain, but his voters don't want to hear it so they won't.

Yep, that's the problem. The information is freely available, but how to get people to read information that shows they are being lied to? Trump's tactic has been to erode away the very idea of "truth" and to make his minions look to him as the only reliable font of information. Johnson is following a similar path, putting in his supporters' heads the idea of some shadowy "elite" that is looking to shaft the honest working Brit. Ironically, he and his Bullingdon chums ARE that elite, but don't let the lads down the Frog and Bucket know that when they're sinking a few swift lunchtime pints and one of them is complaining about that foreign doctor who stitched his head up last Friday after he nutted a Paki. As far as they're concerned, that old Etonian Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson is just the hero the working class need.

This. It became impossible after parliament shoved the ridiculous 4-page Benn Surrender Act through in a day. Did Boris lie at the time? No. Was he prevented from honouring his word? Yes.
