Impeachment in the house isn't s criminal trial. Even the "trial" in the Senate isn't really a trial and carries no possibility of jail time or other criminal penalty. If "convicted" he loses his job. It's a high stakes performance review and the 6th amendment regrettably does not cover that.

That's what a censure is (though it's rarely actually used). Impeachment is higher stakes than mere reprimand, as it can lead to removal from office and a ban on ever holding public office again. I personally think it's a good idea and that he has clearly abdicated his oath to the constitution and should be removed, but I don't think what he did is a slam-dunk violation of any existing specific criminal statute (though I think there is a sort of weak case to be made for a bunch of them).
Edit: I think if House Dems ever got him to testify under Oath, the only question would be how many times he perjured himself before his lawyers yanked him. That's what they nailed Bill on, and Trump's lawyers won't let him do the same imo.
