I wonder if anyone complained that the slaves stole those jobs that they had

People talk shit about illegals doing migrant farm work and stealing those jobs, but it's not something most white Americans would actually do

If immigrants boost GDP, aren't we helping out less fortunate countries like Haiti and Mexico and Guatemala and Somalia by keeping the best and brightest in those countries ?

If there was a limited supply of unskilled labor, the price (wages) for unskilled labor would rise and Americans would gladly do those jobs. Pay $15 an hour to pick lettuce or whatever and you will have American citizens signing up. There's no reason farm work HAS to be sub-minimum wage. Well, no, there is a reason: mass immigration of unskilled workers driving the price down.
It just continues to befuddle me how progressives want to keep unskilled laborers in poverty. But of course idpol has displaced class consciousness so they fret about microaggressions and 31 flavors of LGBTQ+ shit instead.

and your groceries would accordingly be some amount more expensive, which may or may not be fine, or competitive with foreign-grown produce. The result could be yet another excuse for the government to give handouts to agribusiness.
