Topic: why hippies hate sodium lauryl sulfate

Sheila LaBoof started this discussion 6 years ago #93,066

If you read the internet, you'd get the idea that chemical is a deadly toxic poison that companies are imposing upon the public. It's largely bullshit, but what may be baffling is why it would get such a reputation usually reserved for methyl mercury or asbestos. The answer is simple: sodium lauryl sulfate is great for cleaning greasy buildup, and is widely used in soaps and shampoo, both of which hippies have an aversion to, as they have an extreme disdain towards external cleanliness.

Is it the "detergent" molecule? I know some hippies are adverse to the non natural soap molecules because they are smaller and allow for easier passage into our cells

well that's the thing -- hippies aren't exactly doctors of biochemistry

that's why you hear bullshit like some stupid hippie juice will "detoxify" your insides somehow

you fuckers have a liver for a reason

A lot of people think that it's bad for curly or coarse hair because it's trying or somethong like that

Ananthanarayanan M R replied with this 6 years ago, 12 minutes later, 2 hours after the original post[^] [v] #1,054,388

so why not just use water and real soap

The hippy that talked to me about it actually did have his degree in chemistry, but one random example bla bla bla. He makes soap, and didn't seem too into cleanses, just balanced diet and exercise.

Someone was telling me that even terpines and other chemicals in dabs turn carcinogenic when taken at too hot a temperature

Externally hosted imageEvery time I see some "hand-crafted", poncy "artisan" soap with an "SLS free" label or a red circle around "SLS", it makes me think of "No MSG" on foods. Or "gluten free" as a food trend.

you're not gluten intolerant Hannah you don't need to avoid gluten for fuck's sake

It ironically makes the hippy a cynical marketer and capitalist, relying on buzzwords and manufactured need and fear to sell some unnecessary shit

Gluten intolerance is a thing, but people who actually have it are diagnosed as a child, except in extremely rare cases.
