Topic: ALL Star lyrics from English to Pashto then back to English

Anonymous A started this discussion 6 years ago #93,029

Once someone told me that the world would shoot me
I'm not the fastest in the shed
He looked hard with his fingers and fingers
"L" shaped cats
The years to come and the future to come are not
I obeyed the rules and walked the land
No sense in having fun or living
Your brain is smart, but your head is silent
So much to do, so much to see
So what happens when you take the back roads?
You never know where to go
You will never be clear until you are clear
Today, you are a star person, play, play
Today, you are a rock star, go to shows and pay
And all the repeaters are golden
Only shooting stars break the mark

Clearly better than human translation!

Google Translate may miss lyrical subtleties of bad pop songs from 20 years ago, but on the other hand it's not obsessed with tired shtick. So it is better.

I disagree. Language has so much that is context-based that a machine will never get it right.

Eventually a machine will get it right – it has to – but I agree it won't be any time soon. Maybe 50 years down the line.

There's a reason you don't see the UN using Google Translate.

50 years is computers smarter than people lol

anyway deepl says

Someone once told me that the world is gonna roll me...
I'm not the sharpest tool in the barn....
She looked a little stupid with her finger and her thumb....
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead....
Well, the years start to come and they keep coming............................................
Fulfilled to the rules and I hit the ground running....
There was no point in not living for fun...
Your brain is getting smart, but your head is getting stupid....
There is so much to do, so much to see, so much to do, so much to see....
So what's wrong with taking the back doors?
You'll never know if you're not going...
You'll never shine if you don't glow...
Hey, you're an all-star, go play your game, go play....
Hey, you're a rock star, put on the show, and get paid....
And all that sparkles is gold...
Only shooting stars break the fungus...

A lot of people?

I mean, there's abundant Industry Optimism™, but nobody realistically believes computers will be capable of translating as accurately as humans wtihin our lifetimes. We'll probably see general AI sooner than we see human-level MT.

edit: lol

@previous (Ananthanarayanan M R)
Based on the current state of machine learning and the current rate of progress. Obviously, computers will eventually reach (and surpass) human levels of intelligence, but people whom are like HURR IT'S RITE AROUND THE CORNER 5 YEARS DURR are very, very rarely listening to experts (or actual people working in the industry). YouTube videos and PopSci books don't give you a valid insight into the actual state of affairs.

And yeah, I think "proper" translation will require general, not narrow, AI. As does pretty much everybody who's working on MT right now.

I'll bump this thread in 50 years' time to remind you I'm right. ?

um you still didn't give a reason. what obstacle to machine translation is not overcome by giving it more information and processing power??

Do you suppose Google's problem is that they don't have enough processing power? Is the entire corpus of human literature not enough 'information'? The processing power of Google inadequate?

There are so, so many problems to overcome. You can't brute force context. You can't brute force sarcasm, or irony, or wit, or the deep emotion of poetry. General AI is required, and that's very far away. sorry AI overlords I was wrong

yes I do suppose that. I think within a few years we'll have neural networks trained to detect sarcasm. I mean, we already have those but they'll be good.
