That said, Bert also makes me mad at the alt-right. This was, essentially, a mentally vulnerable man that alt-right propaganda has turned into an attack dog. He does not have the capacity to see much nuance in the world and that's been used to manipulate him.

That's what is so sad about all this. Their outwardly hateful demeanor makes it easy to get upset at people like Bert, and I admit I am guilty of that myself. But it's important to remember that most of these people are victims first and foremost. Taken advantage of, molded into the perfect conduit for propaganda, all the while firmly believing they are working in their own self interest as they do the exact opposite. Put yourself in the shoes of a member of the alt-right like Bert. They live in constant fear, and they are constantly being prodded by people whose goals rely on stimulating that fear, either directly or more often indirectly by others who have already fallen victim. I can only hope that some day, as many people like Bert as possible are able to see the ill intentions of their leaders and break free from their indoctrination. I fear that things will have to get much, much worse before that happens, though.
