I loaded up Planet Coaster to practice my building when suddenly my desktop just shut off without warning and didn’t come back on after I pressed the power button. I did some Googling and a lot of the results said that the power supply may have been bad. But it could be something serious like motherboard death.
I come back here to see if anyone here knows a thing or two about this and could explain what is wrong for someone who is a complete retard that can’t understand what was written in the few websites I found courtesy of Google.
I was going to give the machine a complete factory reset too and start fresh. I’m crying right because I don’t know what to do.

What happens when you press the power button? If it does nothing at all, I would say it's most likely the power supply. If you have another computer you could try taking the power supply out and temporarily hook it up to your computer as a test. That's the easiest way to tell for sure without buying a tool for testing it.

Sounds like power supply. I had one that I built a few years ago (built with the cheapest of everything - it was like $200 total) where the cheap Chinese off-brand power supply went out after a year or so. It was a minor annoyance.
You can buy a power supply cheap and they are easy to install. You can buy one on Amazon for $20-30. All you need to install it is one tool: a Phillips screwdriver to take the screws off the back. The cables connecting it to the motherboard are easy to install and remove. They're even shaped so you literally can't plug them in the wrong way. It's a 5 minute job.
Power supply is definitely worth exploring first.
Could you maybe post the specific model number of your computer? Or a picture of it if you can't find the model number (usually on a label on the back)

Okay good that narrows it down enough. Basically desktops come in "regular" size and "small form factor" size. The small form factor ones take weird shaped power supplies that are harder (though not impossible) to find and more expensive. Yours will be a regular size one so that's good!
Anyway, what there is is one big wide cable with 24 pins that goes in the motherboard, one eight (4+4) pin one that goes into a slot next to the CPU on the motherboard (it's split like that because some older CPUs only needed 4 pins), there's an eight (6+2) pin one that goes into your graphics card (most graphics cards only need six, but some need eight which is why it's split like that). Most of the rest of the cables will be flat rectangular ones, SATA power connectors, that go into your hard drive and DVD drive to supply power to those. If there are any unused connections on the power supply, don't worry that's normal (they include extra connectors for people with lots of stuff). Just kind of tuck them away the best you can so they don't get hit by any fans inside the case (this will make a really annoying noise if it happens).
If you're worried, take careful note (and photos) of how everything was plugged in with the factory power supply.
If replacing the power supply doesn't work, first check your connections. This happens to me sometimes. I built my new computer and I was so excited to turn it on and nothing happened. Upon investigation, I hadn't pushed in one of the connectors all the way (was excited so I went too fast with assembling it). Then it powered on and worked great. Always double check, especially if you replaced the power supply while tired, emotional, or inebriated.
If you've replaced the power supply and you are absolutely sure everything is plugged in right (and the switch on the back of the power supply is not in the "off" position), then we can figure out where to go from there.

In the case that my computer is fried then I will like to try my hand at building one. The only problem is that I don't know anything about building PCs as far as compatibility goes. The only things I do know, however, are these requirements.
- Must be within a budget of $600 or less.
- Would like to stick with i7 Cores, my last one was six cores. I mostly just want to stick to what I had and go from there.
- 16 GB of RAM or 8 GB that is capable of being upgraded to 16 GB.
- This is where I don't keep up but what is the most recent graphics card that would get me through the next fifteen or so years of gaming. My PC had a Nvidia GTX 960 (or was it 980, w/e).
- I want to go for the SSD drive but not sure what size I should get. I'm thinking 1 TB if doable.
- I want a smaller more portable case. I'm getting tired of towers now that just sit at home when I could have a case that I could freely carry with me wherever I go when I need to. Plus it makes things cleaner. I am currently looking at this video right now which I found via a Google search.
- Operating system I would like to stick with Windows but if I have to settle for a Linux distro for a time then I wouldn't mind making due with that since Linux is starting to become more game friendly everyday. Plus it's free too. I just want to be able to play Minecraft and The Sims (1, 2, 3, and 4) on it with no problems even if that means having to use Wine or some other program.
This is naturally all a backup plan in case that bright noisy thing did some damage beyond repair.

The video card will add another couple hundred, as will the motherboard potentially, and you forgot the RAM. For a motherboard, the biggest thing to consider is the socket type. If you want that CPU, the mobo needs an LGA 1151 300 series socket. Note that this is different from LGA 1151, it has to say 300 series. And since you want that tiny case, it also needs to be a mini-ITX board (this describes the size). You may also have trouble fitting that big ass GPU in that tiny case, you should double check that too.

You should be good on the GPU actually, it will barely fit with a little under an inch of clearance based on the dimensions I found for both. I would be a little concerned about heat though. That GPU is gonna get hot, and crammed in that tiny case without much airflow may not be good for it in the long run. It may still be fine though, I could be overthinking it.

I would agree if it weren't for the spark and pop that happened last time she turned it on. That definitely is not a RAM seating issue. But you are right that the economical solution isn't to buy a whole new computer. But if she wanted to upgrade anyway, this is a good excuse to do so.

Not sure what exactly you're trying to say. If you found some contradicting information, please share instead of just being a snide cunt about it, so that Catherine doesn't waste her money on components that aren't compatible.
That said, the manufacturer's website for that case says the maximum height for a GPU is 145mm (5.7 inches): https://www.fractal-design.com/products/cases/node/node-202/black/
and Newegg lists that GPU as being 4.4 inches tall: https://www.newegg.com/p/1FT-0004-00293
I'm pretty sure 5.7 is bigger than 4.4, but it's possible that one or both sources are incorrect on their measurements.

God that reminds me of when I sold computers. People would go insane buying computers with an i7 and then run Windows off a 5400 RPM drive because a fast CPU is all you need. Or buy $1000+ computers with an i7 and integrated Intel graphics for gaming ?
It's like they would focus on CPU and nothing else. Forget graphics, forget SSD, just gotta get that i7.

Setting up a desktop always seemed like such a pain (hook up the speakers, hook up the monitor, plug in the mouse and keyboard, plug the power cord in for the tower, plug in the power cord for the speakers, plug in the power cord for the monitor, arrange all the shit in a usable fashion on the desk) to me that this thought never even occurred to me. My computer is at the shop. They don’t think it’s the power supply but it is cheap one. Anon R is right. They said it’s likely a component. I just hope it’s easily repairable for under $75. But I might get a new case though since I just don’t want a fucktall tower. I’m always thinking of starting over by replacing the hard drive with a SSD and new operating system. Just take my old hard drive out and turn it into an external then start over with the SSD drive.

@1,053,080 (Catherine !ttGirlsPl2) > Oh, I thought the key was a one time use thing.
Short answer: not really.
Long answer: Windows comes in two versions: OEM and Retail (there's also volume licensing for corporations/schools but we'll just focus on the ones you as an individual can buy). Retail is the "full price" one, it's like $110 for Windows 10 Home. This can be activated on one machine at a time, but you can transfer it from computer to computer.
OEM is the cheaper one. If you buy a prebuilt PC it will have this version. It's exactly the same software as the retail version, but there are two differences: 1) the key is locked to the motherboard it was first installed on (you can re-install/re-activate it but only on the same system) and 2) Microsoft does not provide free tech support (you have to contact the system builder for Windows tech support). These used to be like 30% cheaper than the retail version but looking now it's about the same price at just under ~$110
Volume licensing - these are where those $5-10 eBay Windows 10 keys come from. These are usually stolen and get blacklisted by Microsoft, losing the activation and basically becoming the same as pirated software when Microsoft eventually finds out they were stolen. Avoid these.
There is a good chance you can get a full, legit, retail version of Windows for free: Windows 10 Education Edition. Go to this website: https://onthehub.com/download/free-software/windows-10-education-for-students/ and see if your school is listed. If you have a .edu email address at a participating school, you can download this totally free (this is, in fact, how I got Windows 10 myself 3 years ago). It's actually Windows 10 Enterprise Edition with all the features of Windows 10 Pro and then some. Plus you get to keep it after graduation, too!
