Topic: A coworker has a picture of herself as her phone's wallpaper

Not a picture of her with someone/something else, it's a picture of just her. Am I reading too much into it or is this really weird?

That's rather strange, tbh. But I have a picture of Cologne Cathedral as my wallpaper so I can't really speak.

Anyone who doesn't have the default background on every device is insane.

lol I actually do use the default background on my phone. I thought it looked good and now I'm so used to it I can't bring myself to look for another one.

That doesn't sound very weird to me, it's a cool looking building.

One of my very favourite buildings. Have you been? Stunning architecture, I can compare it only to Notre Dame and York Minster.

Yes! It's absolutely beautiful — I spent a good few hours inside. Longest nave of any cathedral I've ever visited. I had to take a break half-way up its 500-ish steps, but once I reached the top it's a stunning view. I'm not a big fan of heights so I wasn't prepared for the half-metre section of glass floor at the top (plus it took me aback when Petersglocke suddenly began to toll without warning...) but I'm very glad I visited.

Are there any others around Europe you'd suggest? I've visited Notre Dame (before the unfortunate blaze) and York Minster (although I didn't enter), and the usual culprits (Salisbury, Canterbury).

Here's a (shit) photo I took while climbing last year. It had some construction work ongoing, but it's the only photo I have left on this phone.

Stop it. Not every thread has to devolve into this. You're lucky my phone had that single photo; you wouldn't have believed me either, had I not happened to have kept this one shitty snap.

Fine. It's a nice Cathedral.

In terms of cathedrals, I think the ones you listed just about cover the best that Europe has to offer (plus the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and possibly St Isaac's in St Petersburg).

For me, one of the greatest things about England (which I believe is your country) is its parish churches, especially in the small villages. Many of them are works of art in themselves.

This is one of my very favourite books in my collection, if you can find a copy I highly recommend it. A really fantastic overview of some of the most beautiful churches in England, complete with their (often fascinating) history.

Italy has some gorgeous cathedral architecture, I'm shit for names but Rome was full of them. The pantheon's a weird one cause it wasn't meant to be a church tho.

I'll keep an eye out for a copy, thanks! I live in the South West and only have this book, so far - it omits a lot of detail and entirely neglects certain churches (for no discernible reason), but it's a superb book otherwise.

Yeah, I avoided mention of Italy (my favourite country) because I'm not always entirely clear about the differences over there between churches, cathedrals, basilicas, and so on. But my favourite building in the world is St Peter's. I go there several times a year (I'll never, ever get tired of being in the Sistine Chapel, or of seeing Michelangelo's utterly astonishing Pieta inside the basilia itself). And then you have Florence's incredible Duomo, another awe-inspiring structure (and so full of history). So many monumental buildings in that country.

Because it was built before the Christian era. The Pantheon was a temple before it became a church. I go there only to visit Raphael's grave, I don't feel much spirituality there to be honest.

Man, that's my next few holidays decided.

(I have no idea what the basilica/cathedral/shrine distinction is, honestly.)

That's because you're retarded. A shrine is anywhere Catholics worship, a Cathedral is a religious place the pope deems holy

A cathedral is the seat of the local bishop. If not, it is called a church.

I visited Bookbarn International™ a few days ago – a warehouse in the countryside that sells mountains of secondhand and antique books – and found a copy. (All the listings on Amazon were for the cheaper hardcover version, which is apparently (?) a prior edition.)

I haven't had time to go through it properly, but I had a flick through and it looks really good. The brief section on 'tiny or isolated' churches is exactly my sort of thing. I had a book covering the religious history of the South West, and its section on 'isolated' churches frustratingly only featured those found in remote towns and communities (e.g. St Pancras in Widecombe-in-the-Moor), as opposed to actually remote church buildings.

Thanks for the recommendation!
