The manuscript's original title, The Choad Gatsby, was rejected by the publisher as being offensive and unappealing to readers. Fitzgerald sent a list of alternate titles to the company through his publicist. The list included suggestions like: Gatsby the Choad, Choad Gatsby, The Lawless Choad, Mr. Choad's Wild Ride, and Get a Load of This Chode. In the end, the publisher rejected all Fitzgerald's suggestions and wrote him back saying that it was going to print as The Great Gatsby and if he ever saw Fitzgerald again he was going to punch him square in the goddamned nose. The matter was quietly dropped, and the classic we know as The Great Gatsby was born.
